Class Descriptions

 6 years and up

This year in Instrumental Explorations, your child will experience for him/herself instrumental representatives of the orchestral families, which were discovered in Kindermusik for the Young Child Year One.

We will continue to use the glockenspiel as our "main base"-learning learning instrument, but straight away in the fall a two-stringed dulcimer is introduced as the representative of the string family. Approximately around the New Year, we will add the wind family representative, the recorder. The children are very please and excited to learn a third instrument and especially to be able to transfer their song repertoire from instrument to instrument.

Not only are the students learning the instruments, but also all of the treble clef notes, all basic rhythms, and most important, solfegietto, the do-re-mi-fa-sol-la -ti-do language.

Finally in the spring, the class moves forward to the keyboard. This instrument is now our main learning tool as we continue to build a music foundation that is deep and wide.

Class:Monday 5:30 • Wednesday 4:00 •Saturday 2:30
Prerequisites: None (it is helpful if the student has completed Kindermusik Young Child One, but it is not mandatory).
Adult Participation: Although it is not required, it is best to both student and parent (or supervising adult) to stay and observe the class (i.e. learn along with the child). There is a 25-30 minute "Sharing Time" at the last part of the class in which the accompanying adult does join in with the student.
Materials:Because the curriculum requires the entire 30 weeks and there is an enormous amount of materials to be distributed during the course of the year, these materials will be distributed at even intervals when appropriate. There will be the entire Kindermusik for the Young Child Semester 3 student packet: CD, Folder, songbook, activity pages, activity cards and manipulatives, dulcimer and carry bag. Students will also receive a recorder, carry bag, and songbook. Late winter or early spring, each child will receive Volume I of Music Makers: At The Keyboard which has 2 CDs. Many more materials will be given out during the course of the year, such as music note reading flash cards, solfege cards, carry pouches, etc. etc.

Please note that the class size is limited. Placement in a class is given upon a first-come, first-serve basis REGARDLESS of prior attendance in a class. Each class is 75 minutes long with the parent/caregiver joining in for the last 25-30 minutes. Do allow sufficient time for arrival (bathroom, coats, boots, etc.) before class starts and departure.
