As children get closer to 5 years old, they usually are able to control their interactive social behavior a bit more and waiting a turn, peer interaction, or musical ensemble playing all become a bit more feasible. The fine motor skills have developed so that holding a smaller musical instrument is not so frustrating and being able to manipulate a glockenspiel mallet properly can be attempted and even accomplished. We are still learning with the whole body through music, movement, listening, singing, dancing, and playing rhythm instruments, but now on a level appropriate for the affective and cognitive aspects of this young child. During class children will:
• Develop a working knowledge of rhythms, notes, and musical symbols by singing, stomping and clapping their way through games and activities.
• Explore a variety of musical instruments including rhythm sticks, resonator bells, bells, drums, glockenspiels, and many more.
• Build critical vocal development skills through singing, games, listening and echoing activities. By learning new songs and making up their own, children begin to speak in the language of music.
• Explore the world through creative movement. Young imaginations know no bounds as children learn about people, places and things around them by turning themselves into clocks, hammers, clouds, storms, caterpillars, and even Mozart! Graceful and controlled movement is explored through a playful introduction to ballet, jazz, tap and individual creativity.
• Gain understanding of group dynamics as they participate in ensemble activities with the whole class. Sharing and taking turns on different instruments builds confidence and knowledge of the importance of each individual student.
Our summer session is a fabulous arts enrichment curriculum with music, movement, dance, arts and crafts projects. The student attends the first 60 minutes of class without an accompanying parent/caregiver. Parents/caregivers and other family members (siblings) join the class for “Sharing Time”, the last 15/20 minutes for hands-on arts and crafts “creating.”
Please note that the class size is limited. Placement in a class is given upon a first-come, first-serve basis REGARDLESS of prior attendance in a class. Each class is 75 minutes with parents/caregivers participating during the last 15/20 minutes. Please allow sufficient time for arrival (bathroom, coats, etc.) and departure.
